The soul food at Olivia’s in Venice Beach must have been pretty damn tasty to inspire a song as good as this. Door’s legend is that Morrison ate there often and was sometimes asked to leave so they could close. When the door opens a cool organ melody strides in followed by bass, drum, and guitar in succession, coming together in a funky blues beat that rises and falls over the “course” of the song. Morrison is at home there where he can warm his “mind near your gentle stove.” Outside is the real world where “cars crawl past all stuffed with eyes and street lights share their hollow glow.” Who wouldn’t prefer some good food and a little blues?
